On September 26, 2024, the Regional Maritime University (RMU) had the unique opportunity to visit the MT Hafnia Mikala, during its call at Tema Port. The visiting team included four cadets, six lecturers, and two personnel from Marlin Marine and Crewing Services.
Before boarding, cadets underwent extensive preparation, including safety briefings, receiving personal protective equipment (PPE) branded with Hafnia logos, and training on shipboard protocols.
Upon arrival, the team was warmly welcomed by the Chief Officer who handled the administrative details where she also conducted a thorough safety briefing. The group was then introduced to the ship’s Master, Second Engineer, and two RMU cadets already stationed onboard, Peace from the Engine department and Ornela from the Deck department.
To maximize learning, visitors were divided into two groups. One group, consisting of deck cadets and lecturers from the Nautical Science and Marine Engineering departments, toured the ship’s bridge under the guidance of the Chief Officer. Meanwhile, the second group, comprising engine cadets and lecturers, was led by the Second Engineer to explore the engine room.
Following the tour and a Q and A session with the crew, the group was treated to a meal in the officers’ mess, courtesy of the ship’s chief cook. Before departing, the team met with the Master again for a debriefing, where they presented the crew with a gift of Ghanaian chocolate as a token of appreciation.
The visit to the Hafnia Mikala provided practical exposure to its visitors to the maritime environment. The RMU team thanked the ship’s Master and crew for providing such a welcoming and supportive environment for their cadet training.
Given the positive outcome of the visit, there are plans to organize future tours for other cadets when circumstances permit. RMU remains committed to providing hands-on experiences for its students, which are vital to their professional development, and we thank them for their ongoing collaboration.
