Mikkel Boesen, VP and Head of Hafnia’s Technically Outsourced Fleet (TECOS), took part in the Diversity in Shipping Roundtable presented by TradeWinds and Oldendorff, held in Hamburg during SMM week.
The session, “Beyond good intentions – How are companies redesigning their maritime strategies for more equity”, was moderated by Holly Birkett, correspondent at TradeWinds. Mikkel was joined on the panel by Pia Meling, Chief Marine Services Officer at OSM Thome, Phil Parry, CEO of Spinnaker, Merle Stilkenbäumer, General Manager at Leonhardt & Blumberg Insurance; and Irina Haesler, Member of the Executive Board of the German Shipowners Association.
Panellists were asked what has worked in their own organizations, and, just as importantly, what has not before turning to the challenges that the industry cannot solve alone – like gender pay gaps to harassment. The discussion ran across six areas: gender-informed policies and benefits, anti-harassment frameworks, PPE and vessel design, leadership pathways, data and benchmarking, and digitalization as a route to wider inclusion.
Mikkel spoke to the seafaring side of this work, drawing on his role in Hafnia’s DIBE @ Sea Committee and his involvement in the Hafnia Culture Lab, which examines how crew selection, composition, education, communication and leadership behaviour affect performance and safety on board.
Furthermore the transition to the “New Normal Vessels” from the Hafnia Culture Lab vessels was highlighted.
