Last week, Hafnia’s Copenhagen office had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from the (Maritime Anti-Corruption Network) (MACN) who visited teams at the office to discuss Hafnia’s collaboration with them and the importance of saying no to corruption and bribery. These topics place huge economic constraints on not only ShipOwners around the world, but on higher level government bodies.
Since 2011, there has been an increase in reported incidents which indicates that more and more vessels are both rejecting and reporting meetings with corruption or bribery. Some of the global trends also include increased enforcement and stricter penalties, and that more countries, like China, Egypt, and Brazil, are developing and implementing legislation against corruption.
The vision of MACN is to have a maritime industry free of corruption that enables fair trade to the benefit of society at large. With more than 180 members from the industry, and partnerships with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Chamber of Shipping, and other prominent associations, MACN is one step closer in meeting its mission of raising awareness of the challenges faced in the industry, collaborating with governments, NGOs, and civil society to identify and mitigate the root causes of corruption, and creating a culture of integrity within the maritime community.
By sharing knowledge within the maritime industry, it is possible to analyze corruption trends, engage governments, and take collective action to combat corruption together.
Hafnia is very happy to be a part of this network, and we stand with our maritime colleagues to say no to corruption.
