Kasper Sørensen, Head of Seascale Energy’s Marine Fuel Procurement (East) was a panelist at the IBIA Annual Convention, where he participated in Session Four: The Bunker Buyers Panel – a discussion dedicated to the challenges and future direction of marine fuel procurement.
Moderated by Andrew Brueckner (BP), the panel brought together peers from ONE – Ocean Network Express, Pacific Basin, Seascale Energy, and the NYK Group.
The session explored the overarching theme of key challenges and considerations facing fuel purchasers in today’s bunker supply landscape – balancing commercial demands with evolving fuel technologies, tightening environmental regulations, inconsistent port rules, and increasing pressure to decarbonize.
Representing the shipowner perspective, Kasper contributed several key insights such as the increasing complexity of the bunker buyer’s role, which now demands greater adaptability, broader skill sets, and a strong appetite for change. He also pointed to the shift in supplier–buyer dynamics, with relationships evolving toward deeper, partnership-driven collaboration. Finally, he emphasized the importance of consolidation and scale, especially as the industry progresses toward emerging and alternative fuels.
