Hafnia Releases Culture Lab Results with the University of Southern Denmark and the Danish Maritime Fund

On November 11th, 2025, Hafnia, in partnership with the University of Southern Denmark and the Danish Maritime Fund, released the official results report of its Culture Lab research project.

Initiated in 2023 with independent research by the University of Southern Denmark, the study examined seven Hafnia vessels with crews of at least 50% women and included interviews across three Hafnia offices to explore how onboard culture changes with a more balanced gender mix.

The aim was to identify the factors that promote or hinder an inclusive culture at sea – and to draw insights that can improve how people live and work together aboard our vessels in an increasingly diverse crewing environment.

The report provides valuable insights into the realities of life at sea, highlighting both areas of strength – relating to teamwork, inclusion, leadership and culture – and those requiring continued attention.

From the outset, the purpose of this work has been to build awareness, promote learning, and drive collective improvement – both within Hafnia and across the wider industry.

The overall project has run successfully and has proved that increasing diversity at sea has numerous benefits when looking to the current and future needs of shipping.

Hafnia recognizes that some of the patterns identified by the report call for a dedicated approach and long-term programs. We will analyze these results with humility, understanding that meaningful progress requires openness and accountability to drive improvement.

By sharing these findings, we additionally aim to encourage dialogue and maritime collaboration that leads to more equitable, transparent, and sustainable practices. Improving conditions at sea will also partially depend on curiosity and collective action. We hope this report inspires more shipowners to engage in this topic within their own fleets.

As a continuation of the Culture Lab findings, Hafnia remains committed to fostering a workplace environment that is grounded in respect, safety, and belonging, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
