Hafnia Marks World Maritime Day 2024 (26th September) with a Focus on Enclosed Space Safety

In celebration of World Maritime Day (26th of September), Hafnia marks this year’s theme with a “Did you Know” on: “Navigating the Future: Safety First!”.

With a dedicated focus on safety, Hafnia is drawing awareness towards the crucial protocols surrounding enclosed space entry, ensuring the well-being of its crew.

Referred to “enclosed spaces” include pump rooms, cargo tanks, ballast tanks, void spaces, and other areas, that present a significant risk of potentially hazardous atmosphere.

Over the years, Hafnia and the industry have introduced various solutions to monitor enclosed spaces, effectively minimizing risks.

Some Technological elements include the following:

Fixed Gas Detection Systems in critical areas such as pump rooms and ballast tanks.

Portable Multi-Gas Detection Systems designed to measure various harmful gases.

Personal Multi-Gas Detectors equipped with alarm systems, ensuring every crew member is alerted in real-time.

Future Technologies are being tested such as:

Advanced Drone Technology that performs enclosed space inspections, offering safer alternatives to human entry.

AI-based Monitoring Systems that further enhance industrial safety by providing real-time data across sectors such as oil, gas, and manufacturing.

Hafnia places a strong emphasis on the following:

Pre-entry checks, continuous ventilation, and re-checking of spaces form part of the company’s strict safety culture.

Regular maintenance of safety and rescue equipment to guarantee their effectiveness during emergencies.

Familiarization of crew with the operation of safety and rescue equipment to avoid delays during incidents.

Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and enclosed space entry permits.

Realistic drills are designed to measure the effectiveness of the rescue operation and continuous improvements.

Familiarization of all crew with the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) of previous cargo to identify potential hazards.

Use of two portable multi-gas detectors to assess gas concentrations at various levels.

Good communication between crew members during enclosed space entry, with strict attention to ensure attendants remain focused.

Risk assessment meetings before entries, ensuring that all variables are considered and addressed.

For World Maritime Day, we extend our warmest wishes to our colleagues at sea and onshore and wish everyone the continued vigilance it takes to keep safety first as a priority across the entire industry.
