Hafnia is very pleased to announce our partnership with technology group Wärtsilä to retrofit ten Bird Class oil and chemical tankers, bolstering their propulsion efficiency. The order, secured by Wärtsilä in October 2023, involves the implementation of Wärtsilä’s EnergoFlow and EnergoProFin solutions.
EnergoFlow, an innovative pre-swirl stator, facilitates an optimal inflow for the propeller, reducing fuel consumption and emissions across various operational conditions. Meanwhile, EnergoProFin, an energy-saving propeller cap with rotating fins, diminishes energy losses caused by the propeller hub vortex. This results in an overall enhancement of propulsion efficiency and a significant reduction in underwater noise.
Ralph Juhl, EVP and Technical Director at Hafnia, expressed enthusiasm about the retrofit, stating, “There are many benefits to be gained by improving the operating efficiency of our vessels’ propulsion systems, and we look forward to having these innovative Wärtsilä solutions installed. At Hafnia, we are working hard to decarbonize our operations, and these retrofitted solutions will support this commitment.”
By boosting the fuel efficiency of the vessels, the retrofit contributes to emission reduction, lowered operating costs, and improvements in the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) value.
Francois Emin, Product Manager – Propulsion at Wärtsilä, highlighted the significance of the OPTI Design methodology, stating, “Wärtsilä’s OPTI Design methodology takes advantage of computational fluid dynamics along with our extensive in-house know-how. The EnergoProFin propeller cap and EnergoFlow pre-swirl stator work together to deliver meaningful fuel savings and better environmental performance, which are key ambitions for today’s leading operators.”
The delivery of Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled to commence in 2024, with the retrofit project spanning over a two-year period for the ten vessels.
This initiative aligns with Hafnia’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable shipping practices.
