Hafnia is pleased to have participated in the Getting to Zero Coalition’s annual working session 2022, represented and led for Hafnia by Ralph Juhl, Head of Technical and Executive Board Member.
During the annual session in June 2022, Hafnia together with over 100 delegates from across the maritime value chain convened in Denmark with the objective of turning the ambition of a full decarbonization of the maritime sector by 2050 into a concrete and actionable plan.
Announced at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019 (founded by Friends of Ocean Action), the Getting to Zero Coalition counts more than 200 member organizations within the maritime, energy, infrastructure, and finance sectors.
Getting to Zero Coalition is a partnership between the Global Maritime Forum and World Economic Forum, bringing together a community of ambitious stakeholders, committed to the decarbonization of shipping. The overall ambition of the Getting to Zero Coalition is to have commercially viable zero-emission vessels operating along deep-sea trade routes by 2030, supported by the necessary infrastructure for scalable net zero- carbon energy sources including production, distribution, storage, and bunkering, towards a full decarbonization by 2050.
Through a 2021 industry-led Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonization and a recent announcement at the Getting to Zero Coalition 2022 Working Group Session, the Coalition, which Hafnia is a member of, has raised their ambition to fully decarbonize the sector by 2050, keeping in line with science-based climate targets.
During the working session, member participants focused on the combination and acceleration of four change levers: technology on land and on board, mobilizing demand, financing, and policy.
From Transition Strategy to Action List To explore and determine what the maritime sector must do in the short and medium term to accelerate shipping decarbonization, workshop participants collaborated in working groups on breaking down the Getting to Zero Coalition’s “Strategy for the Transition to Zero-Emission Shipping” into concrete actions.
“Being a member of Getting to Zero Coalition is a significant step in the move towards collaboratively addressing industry challenges with leading players. It goes without saying, that environmental standards in our industry need to evolve and improve and that decisions made for our business, by individual states, regions and globally, have major impact on our daily operations and our future success as a company. It is therefore important to join such collaborative alliances, where the Hafnia voice is heard and where we can directly influence decision-makers and thus guide our own future, in the best manner possible”, says Ralph Juhl of Hafnia.
“This year’s working session was the first physical meeting since 2020, and without a doubt much more effective than the virtual meetings held during Covid. Participating members were very active, with strong ideas, with a concentrated focus on tangibly moving forward, and find achievable and effective solutions to the many unknowns that we are looking into” Ralph Juhl further continues.
Hafnia has been a member of the Getting to Zero Coalition since its inception in 2020.
