Hafnia is pleased to announce the naming of the ECOMAR GIRONDE, the final vessel in the four-ship ECOMAR newbuilding program developed in joint venture with Socatra of France.
Constructed at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China, the ECOMAR GIRONDE is a 49,800-dwt dual-fuel, methanol-capable Chemical IMO II Medium-Range tanker.
With her delivery, the ECOMAR quartet (comprised of the ECOMAR GASCOGNE, ECOMAR GARONNE, ECOMAR GUYENNE and the ECOMAR GIRONDE) is now complete, marking an important milestone for both partners, concluding this new-building series.
ECOMAR’s dual-fuel methanol IMO II vessels are designed to operate efficiently on conventional fuel today, while being prepared for methanol as infrastructure and fuel availability continue to develop.
This dual-fuel capability reflects a pragmatic approach to the energy transition balancing present operational needs with readiness for lower-emission fuels over time. Beyond propulsion, the vessel incorporates modern navigation systems, enhanced cargo handling arrangements, and fuel-efficient machinery.
The naming ceremony was held at GSI Shipyard in Guangzhou on January 27th, 2026, attended by representatives from Hafnia, Socatra, GSI, TotalEnergies, Bureau Veritas, BRS and other key stakeholders.
Raphaële Guenot, Hafnia’s Head of ESG, Executive Projects and Compliance and a board member of ECOMAR, acted as the vessel’s Godmother, officially naming and blessing the ship for its future operations.
Ralph Juhl, EVP Head of Technical at Hafnia, commented during the naming ceremony “This vessel reflects a pragmatic approach to the energy transition – designed to operate efficiently today while being prepared for the fuels of tomorrow. Delivering complex vessels like this depends on long-standing partnerships, trust, and close cooperation across all parties involved.”
The project builds on Hafnia’s long-standing relationship with Guangzhou Shipyard International and BRS, spanning more than twelve years and 24 delivered vessels since 2013, supported by a continuous Hafnia site team presence at the yard.
Hafnia extends our sincere appreciation to Socatra of France, whose close collaboration and partnership have been fundamental to bringing the ECOMAR program to completion.
The vessels in the ECOMAR series are time-charted to TotalEnergies for a multi-year period, continuing the partners’ long-standing cooperation with the energy sector.
With the program now complete, Hafnia and its partners look forward to the vessels’ performance in service, particularly in relation to their operational efficiency and environmental capabilities.
