From “At Sea” to “On Shore” with Maria Javellana, GM

At Hafnia, our people-first approach aims to ensure that our people receive the right opportunities to thrive in their positions and grow both personally and professionally. We are glad to share an interview with our General Manager/Head of Fleet, Maria Kristina Batosalem Javellana, to hear about her experience working at Hafnia and the transition from working at sea to working on shore.

How was life at sea onboard a Hafnia vessel?

Life aboard a Hafnia vessel was truly unforgettable. My last ship before transitioning to a shore-based role was the BW Lara. Life at sea typically combines routine tasks, camaraderie, and adjusting to the maritime environment. However, what made this experience stand out was that I joined the vessel in China during her 3rd special survey. Just as we were completing the docking, the COVID-19 Pandemic started.

Despite the challenges, Hafnia, as the vessel’s owner and commercial operator, provided great support. The crew on board was very diverse, and while the vessel’s operations were particularly demanding during the pandemic, Hafnia ensured we had everything we needed. This included communication with our loved ones, adequate provisions and supplies, and the necessary spares for maintenance. The living conditions improved notably during our dry dock period, making the experience even more memorable.

What were some of your most memorable experiences from that time?

I’ve always had great experiences when joining a vessel. However, my last contract was unique and particularly challenging. I spent more time in the shipyard with a 15-year-old vessel, which presented its difficulties. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, I ended up staying on board for more than 11 months. This experience was unlike any of my previous trips.

On the BW Lara, despite my extensive experience as a Master on several vessels, I still encountered discrimination from external parties such as Pilots, Port Authorities, and Shore personnel. However, Hafnia stood by us as our strongest supporter, empowering us and ensuring we were treated equally. Life onboard is tough, and it’s even tougher when you’re part of a minority, whether by gender or nationality. But it’s also vibrant and rewarding, especially when you’re sailing and working in a diverse environment with strong support from your Leadership.

How did you go from working at sea to working on shore?

During my last contract, I realized that my work had become routine, and I was craving new challenges. I’ve always been passionate about contributing positively to the maritime industry, whether through education or on the technical side. I began to recognize that I wanted to do more than what my role onboard allowed.

Was it always your ambition to work on shore?

Yes, eventually I decided to pursue my passion for helping the maritime industry in the best way I could. Sailing is incredibly challenging, but it’s also deeply fulfilling. Each contract onboard brought unique memories and allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. I wanted to leave a meaningful legacy, both from my time at sea and now in my shore-based role. It’s a great feeling to know that, even if people don’t remember your face or name, the positive impact you made will be remembered and passed on to future generations.

How has Hafnia helped you on your career path?

Hafnia recognizes my potential and has opened new opportunities for me, which is incredibly motivating. They have supported not only my professional growth but also my personal development. Working with great leaders who consistently motivate and support their employees has been invaluable. With this platform, I now have more freedom and support to pursue my passion.

How have your experiences working at sea been useful on shore?

My experience at sea has been incredibly valuable, especially as my work onshore aligns with the types of vessels I’ve sailed on. The skills gained at sea are highly transferable to life ashore. Handling various cargoes, ports, and unexpected challenges has sharpened my critical thinking and resilience, which is essential for leadership roles. Working with diverse teams on parcel tankers has strengthened my ability to collaborate and ensure safe operations. The challenges of the COVID-19 era taught me to thrive in dynamic, ever-changing environments. Maintaining equipment and vessels through close work with engineers and experts has honed my technical expertise. Interacting with diverse individuals onboard and at ports has developed my cultural sensitivity and interpersonal skills. The structured nature of life at sea taught me the importance of effective time management, which is critical in roles onboard and onshore. My early focus on managing finances onboard has also been invaluable ashore, improving my ability to forecast, track, and allocate resources effectively. As a whole, transitioning from ship to shore has only enhanced my knowledge and skills.

What are some of your best experiences working on shore?

One of the most memorable experiences of my life was when I first took over managing Hafnia’s Chemical Fleet. The journey wasn’t easy, but I was able to navigate it thanks to a supportive leader and colleagues who never stopped believing in me.
